![]() The day started at 7:30 a.m. for Kenion Training D1 Elite Red on a cold and breezy Sunday morning. Nearly 12 hours later, the Bay area team celebrated their first Passing Down regional title in their four years of competing at the distinguished state 7-on-7 tournament. KT D1 Elite Red used precision passing from tournament Most Valuable Player Jake Haener and a high energy defense to go undefeated in the 40-team field, culminating in a 22-14 title game victory over Team SWAG Factory at Chabot College. Kenion Training C.E.O. Nathan Kenion stood on the sidelines watching and coaching his squad throughout the lengthy day. The former De La Salle star can now say he’s produced a Nor Cal regional champion. “Man, it feels really good and to make it even sweeter – we won in the biggest tourney ever in Nor Cal,” Kenion said. Offensively, Haener left the Chabot spectators in awe with his arm and decision making. Haener threw darts to Mountain West recruit Erik Krommenhoek on inside routes and Alex Hutchinson deep down the field. His top playmakers, though, were Isaiah Randle and A’Jae Boyd. Both combined for 16 touchdowns in the tournament with Boyd finding the end zone six times during the playoffs. “Jake was lights out all day,” Kenion said. “He made big plays every time we needed it. What stuck out to me was his composure throughout the whole day. Randle was big time all day. Boyd had a breakout day. Krommenhoek and Hutchinson were steady threats all day too.” Defensively, five different KT players snatched the ball from the air, as Tre White, Isaiah Lewis, Paul Scott, Kairee Robinson and Antoine Tanner all had interceptions; with the latter getting the game-clinching pick in the championship game. Tanner got his interception against SWAG’s Armando Muzquiz, who was putting together a near flawless tournament performance on his end before the final contest. Since entering Passing Down in 2013, Kenion Training has produced three straight Best of the West qualifiers. Only this time, KT can now make room for the Nor Cal regional trophy. Joining them at the Best of the West finals in Orange County will be SWAG Factory, Game-Fit and Silly U Orange.
