Ground Zero Graham solidifies spot as best in the nation with win over KT Prep in BOTW X

IRVINE, CA -- Lucas Lenhoff threw two touchdowns, and MVP Darion Green-Warren returned an interception for a touchdown as Ground Zero claimed their 3rd Best of the West Championship with a 18-8 win over KT Prep on Sunday at Portola Stadium… There is no argument on who the Best of the West is, and there may be little argument on who the best team in the country is either for that matter. Ground Zero Graham completed a perfect run in the playoffs deposing of TMP Legacy, NOZON3, and KT Prep by a combined scored of 83-28.

“Best Ground Zero team ever,” claimed Ground Zero coach Anthony Brown.

The Inland Empire based program is no stranger to the Best of the West claiming titles in 2014 and 2016 as well.

“The 2014 team paved the way,” said Brown. “The 2016 team had guys but this team has dudes. They expected to win.”

“Special,” Ground Zero co-founder Armond Hawkins said about winning a third Best of the West title. “We come to this event every year because it’s really the best event in the world. And it’s on our side of town. We try to win this thing every year.”

MVP Darion Green-Warren
Quarterback Lucas Lenhoff has been consistent all circuit for Ground Zero and the championship game was no different. He brushed off an interception on the first drive to complete 6-of-8 passes capped by a 5-yard touchdown pass to Eren East to start the scoring.

Darion Green-Warren picked off KT Prep’s first pass attempt on the ensuring drive for a 7-yard return for a score. Lenoff was a perfect 5-of-5 on Ground Zero’s next series including another 5-yard touchdown pass for an 18-0 lead.

KT Prep would add a 60-yard touchdown pass to complete the scoring. Lenoff finished 16-of-22 passing for 202 yards, the two touchdowns, and two interceptions.

LSU bound Elias Ricks made his 7-on-7 debut for Ground Zero with much fanfare. And while Ricks may garner more attention nationally, Green-Warren was the consistent defender for the Ground Zero defense. His pick-six not only put the game out of reach but put an exclamation point on his performance at Best of the West X, and he walked away with the Baller Belt as the Most Valuable Player.

IRVINE, CA -- Kodi Decambra’s 15-yard interception return for a touchdown with two minutes to play sealed Phase1 Gamers 19-6 win over Premium Trendsetters for the 2019 Jr Best of the West Championship. Elijah Palmer was named MVP...

Palmer’s five-yard touchdown reception from Edward Sandoval extended Phase1’s lead to 13-6 with 4:01 remaining. Sandoval’s two-point conversion pass fell incomplete giving Premium Trendsetters a chance to tie or win.

But Pierce Clarkson was intercepted by Decambra to end any chance at a comeback.

Decambra started the scoring with a nine-yard catch from Sandoval. The subsequent extra point made it 7-0. Premium responded on its next possession to cut the lead to 7-6.

Phase1 Gamers finished the day with a 5-0 record.

Road to Best of the West 10 Ends in Orange County

Kris Hutson of Premium
The 2019 Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 circuit concludes April 28 at Best of the West X in Irvine, CA. The championship tournament will feature club teams that earned automatic berths in the six regionals.

The top team heading into Best of the West is Northwest Regional champion FSP 5-Star. While not as talented as their counterpart Blue Chip, 5-Star by far was the most consistent team in the Passing Down 7-on7 circuit winning 12 of 13 games and scoring 340 points. Their lone loss was to Silly U by a touchdown in the NorCal Regional quarterfinals.

Defending Best of the West champion OC Elite Sky Blue (as OC Premium in 2018) did not win a regional this circuit or play in a championship game. Nonetheless, they won 10 of 12 games and scored 307 points. If not for a tough loss to clubmates OC Elite Hyndrix in the SoCal Regional quarterfinals, Sky Blue likely advances to the finals. Howevee, they did score a huge win over FSP Blue Chip in the NorCal Regional quarterfinals before losing to Premium in the semifinals to earn a bid to defend their title.

Three-time defending Bay Area Regional champions KT Prep Money went 7-0 in San Francisco. They beat NOZON3 and TMP Legacy in the semifinals and finals, respectively. They are always a force. They lost to OC Premium and BSN Sports in the BOTW championship in 2018 and 2017, respectively.

Ground Zero Graham is widely considered one of the top if not the top 7-on-7 club in the nation in 2019. GZ Graham was a perfect 7-0 in the SoCal Regional. EAT 1K pushed them in the semifinals, and GZ had to beat little brother Ground Zero Carr for the championship. The two-time BOTW champions is the team to beat in Irvine.

Premium Sports declined to play in the NorCal Regional Championship as both Premium Fig and Premium Supreme advanced to the final. Both squads were a perfect 6-0 heading into the final, and they will have something to prove at BOTW to see who is best between them.

Two regional tournaments did not produce an unbeaten champion.

Florida Fire lost to Premium Legends and escaped with a one-point win versus B2G in pool play. They had to fend of OC Elite Hyndrix, 6-0, in the No. 8/9 seed playoff game. Their only blowout win came in the semifinals over Formula4Speed Team Pressure, 18-0, before beating Premier Dawgs, 7-6, in the West Coast Regional final.

Premium Dime lost by one to AZ O.T.B Elite and had one blowout win over Carson AIGA, 20-0, pool play. In playoffs, they had three consecutive one-point wins over Phase1 High Rollers, Premier Dawgs, and 2020 Force Elite in the Southwest Regional final. They could have easily ended their day in Phoenix with a 2-2 record.

Check back for the full Best of the West roster of teams, schedule, and bracket.

Florida Wins the West

Florida Fire defeats Premier Dawgs, 7-6, in West Coast Regional Champioship

BY PASSING DOWN STAFF -- INFO@PASSINGDOWN.COM

FONTANA, CA -- Florida Fire relied on its stellar defense in the final seconds to hold off Premier Dawgs, 7-6, in the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Regional championship game Sunday night at Ralph Lewis Sports Park. Both teams along with DYNASTY and Formula4Speed’s Team Pressure punched their ticket to Best of the West X in Irvine. Florida Fire’s Chaz Smith was named tournament MVP...

The Florida Fire offense struggled to score points, eaking out one-score wins after another in the playoffs. But their defense was solid, and it was no different in the final game in Fontana.

Premier Dawgs gained just 25 yards and one first down on its first three offensive possessions, before driving 70 yards to take a 6-0 lead with three minutes to play.

After they scored, Florida Fire Coach Laine knew he had to change it up if his team was going win in the final minutes. “I have a quick offense,” he said. “Word calls.”

But he wouldn’t need to hurry just yet.

The championship game is real football in the final two minutes, the clock stops on incomplete passes, penalties, and when players run out of bounds. On first downs, it stops until the ball is ready for play.

However, quarterback Santino Marucci was a little more aggressive. He went deep on his first two throws missing a few open receivers.

Facing third down from the minus 30 and needing 15 yards to keep Fire’s title hopes alive, Marucci hit an open receiver for a 16-yard gain. But a subsequent sack and two more incomplete passes gave Premier the ball back with 1:09 to play.

“Defense was stellar all day,” Coach Laine said. And the Fire defense got Marucci and the offense one more shot to win the game after stopping Premier with :25 left in the game.

This time, the quick offense matched the stellar play of the defense.

Marucci hit Marc Britt for consecutive 30 plus yard gains, the second a 39-yard touchdown to tie the game with :10 left.

“I called the same play twice,” said Coach Laine. “I went back to it. I don’t know if they didn’t see it or line up correctly, and it went for a touchdown.”

Fire still needed to score an extra point to take the lead and avoid overtime.

“I need you guys, this is a money play,” he said about the subsequent PAT. “Marucci found [Karaun] St. Louis sitting by himself.”

Karaun St. Louis’ catch gave Fire a 7-6 lead, but the defense’s job wasn’t over. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for their excessive celebration after the touchdown gave Premier the ball at the minus 45.

Premier quickly gained 16 yards to move the ball to the 39-yard line. A holding penalty -- that Premier declined -- stopped the clock with just :05 left. Nonetheless, the Fire defense intercepted Premier’s Hail Mary to seal the win and take the West Coast Regional title belt back home.

“Premier was a good team,” said Coach Laine. “We were 0-2 in the West before today. We sealed the deal, taking it back to South Florida with a victory.”

5-Star Performance

FSP 5-Star Tops Heir Black, 24-8, in Passing Down Northwest Regional Championship
BY PASSING DOWN STAFF -- INFO@PASSINGDOWN.COM
March 10, 2019

PORTLAND, OR -- Quarterback Caden Filer threw three touchdowns, including a 70-yarder to Junior Alexander, and MVP Reed Shumpert made a clutch catch down the stretch as FSP 5-Star beat Heir Black, 24-8, in the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Regional championship on Sunday at Mountain View Champions Park...

Filer was dropping dimes all day, and Shumpert was on the receiving end of a lot of those. The dynamic duo carried that mojo into the final game.

Heir Black was the No. 2 overall seed and dominated most of tournament. But they couldn’t get in rhythm in the championship.

FSP 5-Star drove 70-yards capped by a Filer to Shumpert touchdown pass to start the game. Deville Dickerson’s picked off Heir on the next drive and took it back for six points to extend the lead.

FSP would score again to make it 18-0 before Heir could settle in and grab their composure. Heir responded and cut the deficit to 18-8 midway through the game.

Alexander’s 70-yard reception -- with an Heir defender grasping his jersey before the catch -- put the game out of reach.

FSP 5-Star and Heir both earn berths to 2019 Best of the West Finals on April 28 in Southern California.

Heir Takes Down FSP in Double OT

PORTLAND, OR -- MVP Jace Villers’ 10-yard touchdown reception sealed Heir’s 25-19 double overtime victory over FSP Future in the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Junior Regional at Mountain View Champions Park…

Heir built an early 13-0 lead on its first two possessions only to see it vanish in a blink of an eye. FSP Future cut the deficit on its next drive. They scored a second unanswered touchdown but were unable to take the lead when they missed their second PAT attempt.

Both teams traded scoreless possessions until Heir held it last as time expired.

FSP Future won the toss and elected to start on defense in overtime. Heir scored to take a 19-0 lead. Their PAT was no good setting up FSP to win the game. FSP tied it 19-19 but could not convert as well sending the game into a second overtime.

FSP began on offense in the second period but threw two incomplete passes. After missing on their first pass, Heir had one down to win the game. Jace Villers -- who had been dominant all tournament on both sides of the ball -- came down with the crucial 10-yard touchdown reception to lift Heir to the 2019 Northwest Junior Regional championship.

The 25-19 win secured Heir a spot in the 2019 Best of the West finals on April 27 in Southern California.

Big Brother Holds off Little Brother in the Rain

FONTANA, CA -- Sunday afternoon began with 27 teams from all parts of California and Nevada and ended with two from the same club organization. In a battle of Ground Zero brethren, Team Graham staved off Team Carr, 7-6, amidst driving rain in the Passing Down Elite 7-on-7 Southern California Regional at Ralph Lewis Sports Park…

The rain came and went throughout Sunday in Fontana but the quarterbacks kept slinging the rock. Ground Zero Carr quarterback Doug Brumfield’s five-yard touchdown pass with 46 seconds to play made it 7-6. But his two-point conversion attempt was thrown a little high and Ground Zero Graham held off Ground Zero Carr in the championship game.

“It’s like big brother playing little brother,” tournament MVP LV Bunkley-Shelton said about playing against his fellow organization club.

Bunkley-Shelton caught a 15-yard touchdown from Lucas Lenhoff on Ground Zero Graham’s second drive to give them a 7-0 lead. Lenhoff finished 14-of-22 passing with 164 yards and the lone touchdown. Bunkley-Shelton was on the receiving end of most of those throws including a crucial reception that set up the their only scoring drive.

“I had a lot of practice,” he said about playing in the rain.

It’s been a wet and rainy start to the 7-on-7 circuit throughout California and nation for that matter. And the practice has obviously helped him adapt to catching the ball in the wet weather.

But he wasn’t just a force on offense.

Before Brumfield threw the touchdown, Bunkley-Shelton appeared to have sealed the game with a goal line interception. However, it was ruled a sack as the four-second tee-timer expired before he released the ball.

“I jumped it,” he said. “[Brumfield] is my quarterback at Serra. I know what he was trying to do.”

The 2020 Gardena (CA) Serra 4-star prospect currently has 21 offers and counting.

“Washington State, Oregon, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State and Arizona State,” Bunkley-Shelton said of the schools that were standing out to him.

Ground Zero Graham was a perfect 7-0 Sunday. Ground Zero Carr finished 6-2 with their only other loss coming to EAT 1K that almost knocked off Graham in the semifinals. Carr was also close to losing in the other semifinal. OC Elite Hyndrix tied the game in overtime and elected to go for two points and the win. Carr stopped them and set up the big brother versus little brother title game.

Ground Zero is no stranger to Passing Down tournaments as they won Best of the West V and VII in 2014 and 2016, respectively. And GZ will now send two squads to Best of the West X the last Sunday in April.

KT Prep Secures 4th Consecutive Regional Championship

BY PASSING DOWN STAFF -- INFO@PASSINGDOWN.COM
February 9, 2019

Picture
SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- The last time a TMP franchise won a Passing Down regional in the Northern part of the Golden State was in 2015. Since KT Prep has taken reign as the region’s top 7-on-7 club in the circuit. KT has won a regional each of the last three years and added their fourth consecutive title on Sunday with a come from behind 28-26 win over TMP Legacy at City College of San Francisco…

KT Prep Money -- KT Prep’s top 7-on-7 club team -- ran through the 2019 Passing Down Bay Area Regional with an unblemished record earning the second overall seed Sunday in San Francisco.

After needing overtime to beat NOZON3 in the semifinals, it looked like KT Prep Money was gonna cruise to a championship win after jumping out to a 8-0 lead over TMP Legacy.

TMP responded to cut it to 8-6, and traded touchdowns thereafter. KT scored two 2-point conversions to TMP’s one to push their lead to 22-14. Legacy battled back scoring twice to take a 26-22 lead with just over three minutes to play. But extra-point issues plagued TMP once again as KT would only lead a touchdown to win.

And KT wasted no time on its next drive, scoring on a long pass play to take the lead. A penalty on TMP during the PAT ran the clock down to two minutes. Setting up TMP Legacy with a chance to take home the title in a classic two-minute drill.

In Passing Down Regional championship games, the final two minutes is played in real game time. The clock stops for incomplete passes, penalties, and players running out of bounds. On first downs it stops until the referee signals the ball is ready for play.

After two incomplete passes, TMP secured its first first down and eventually drove the ball inside the 10 with 46 seconds to play. But Legacy could not score on three tries from the six-yard line. KT Prep Money took possession on downs and ran out the clock to secure its fourth consecutive Bay Area/Northern California championship.

KT Prep Money and TMP Legacy both earn invites to Best of the West X on Sunday April 28 in Southern California.

TMP Legacy overcame a shaky start to advance to the championship game. A 20-0 loss to MLUYFI Platinum was the result of their first pool play game. Nonetheless, TMP Legacy gathered their composure and won three straight in the playoffs, including a 24-18 win over top overall seed Game-Fit Elite, to set a rematch with MLUYFI in the semifinals.

This time TMP Legacy was the better team posting a 26-0 win to advance to the championship game.
